DAY 9: Hellhound on His Trail

Posted on December 21, 2012 in News

I had to include this book even though it is a 2011 publication. Close enough, right? I went right from 11/22/63 to reading Hellhound on His Trail as Stephen King really got me interested in the turbulent 1960s with his fictionalized account of the JFK assassination. I thought this book would be primarily about James Earl Ray and his pursuit of King, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was also a thorough account of the last year of King’s life, the sanitation worker strike in Memphis, and the techniques used to inspire change during uncertain times. Even though it will make you angry (so many “what ifs”), it will also serve to inspire. Personally, I loved reading about the slogans, speeches, rallies, marches, and protests. Any advocate will find something in this expertly-crafted bio.

Hellhound On His Trail: The Electrifying Account of the Largest Manhunt In American History

On April 4, 1968, James Earl Ray shot Martin Luther King at the Lorraine Motel. The nation was shocked, enraged, and saddened. As chaos erupted across the country and mourners gathered at King’s funeral, investigators launched a sixty-five day search for King’s assassin that would lead them across two continents. With a blistering, cross-cutting narrative that draws on a wealth of dramatic unpublished documents, Hampton Sides, bestselling author of Ghost Soldiers, delivers a non-fiction thriller in the tradition of William Manchester’s The Death of a President and Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood. With Hellhound On His Trail, Sides shines a light on the largest manhunt in American history and brings it to life for all to see.
